Connect Through Community Service

Community service is a huge part of who we are as a university and our students volunteer thousands of hours of their time every year. Choose the community service experience that's right for you and then connect what you learn to your academic plan.

Community service experiences range from volunteering for a few hours with a local charity to working with South Carolina children through Cocky’s Reading Express to leading a group of fellow volunteers on an Alternative Break across the country. The university provides offices, people and support resources to help you learn how to share your talents and skills with others to make a difference.

Stop by the Leadership and Service Center in the Russell House to explore community service experiences that would be a good fit for you or check out their database of local agencies. Leadership coaches are ready to help you find your niche and you can connect your experiences with your academic work by taking a service learning course.

USC Connect offers some recommendations based on your major and can help you learn to reflect on your experiences, then document, apply and share what you've learned with others. If you choose, you may even use these experiences to pursue Graduation with Leadership Distinction in Community Service.

I realized then that giving back to the community that built me into the woman I have become is exactly what my weekly routine was missing. Since that day, community service has become a crucial part of my college experience and has aided not only in my overall education but also my post-graduation plans and career goals.
