Herbert began his tenure at USC as a graduate assistant in 1985 and was named director of campus recreation in 1998.

Prior to coming to USC, Herbert worked in the police department in Goose Creek, S.C.

Herbert is active in the Carolina community. He has taught University 101 and Introduction to Strength Training. In addition, he has served as a member of the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support Professional Development Committee, Student Health Services Advisory Committee and Blatt P.E. Center Advisory Committee.

Herbert is a graduate of the NIRSA: Leaders in College Recreation School of Recreational Sport Management, is a certified pool operator and served as the National Intramural Recreational State Director for S.C. He was named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America.

Herbert earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the Baptist College at Charleston in 1983 and a Master in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1988. He is a member of Chapin United Methodist Church, serving on their parking patrol, and the U.S. Powerlifting Association, where he is a two-time participant in the world powerlifting championship.

Herbert says he loves working at the Strom and seeing how the opportunities available for Carolina students enrich their lives—not only while they are at USC but also after graduation.
