Navigation Region

Every page in your site must be represented in your navigation. This helps visitors find information on your site and clearly points to where they are within your site by displaying a garnet bar and arrow indicating the current page.

Unit navigation appears in the first column on all pages and is the visual representation of your unit site map. As the user moves through the site, the navigation builds out the site structure in the gray box above the current page garnet bar and displays any sibling and children pages in the lighter box below it.

The first link in your navigation is a link back to your home page and will be labeled with your unit name. Some units can use a shortened name; for example, the Office of the Vice President for Research can use “VP for Research.” The remaining top-level navigation items will always be displayed, and these should be one- or two-word descriptions of the information visitors will find there.

At the bottom of the navigation, you can add a link to an internal site which contains information specifically for faculty and staff members and current students. This link is in a lighter gray box and uses an internal audience’s name for your unit, “My [unit name].” For example, the College of Education uses “My COE” for their internal site. This should be the only link from your marketing site to your internal site.

Navigation Items

Every page in you site must be represented in your navigation. Only pages from your site can be represented in your navigation and you can only link to pages within the section you are in in the navigation. Do not link from one section to another in you site through the navigation.

No Hidden Pages

If you don's see a garnet bar in your navigation, then your page is hidden from the navigation and something is broken. We don't allow hidden pages because it presents confusion for the site user.
