Our climate – whether local or global – impacts our lives on a daily basis. Have you ever considered what causes it to behave the way it does? Have you given any thought to how we measure meteorological phenomena or how changes in these measurements can affect future weather patterns?
This unique hands-on course offers you the opportunity to explore the extraordinary processes that influence local, regional, and global weather and climate patterns and discuss recent Hurricane Matthew. You will measure temperatures of various surfaces using infrared thermometers, observe the instruments at our campus weather station, use sling psychrometers to measure relative humidity, and launch a weather balloon. Other activities will include computer simulations to examine energy, moisture, storm systems, and climate change. You will also discover how atmospheric processes influence storm systems – including thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes – and lastly you'll will learn how meteorologists make weather forecasts by using their computer tools to make your own forecasts.
