Digital Humanities Course Development Stipends

Next Call for Grant Proposals Spring 2017

Overview

The Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at the University of South Carolina are pleased to announce stipends to support the development of digital humanities courses. A successful proposal will transform an existing USC humanities course into a Digital Humanities course by, for example, incorporating digital research methods or tools into a major course assignment or unit. The CDH and CTE will provide advice and support during the course development period, including training and technical support required to prepare the proposed course prior to the semester it is offered.

Stipend Recipients Will...

  • Consult with CDH and/or CTE staff as appropriate throughout the course development process.
  • Teach the course within 18 months of the stipend award.
  • Participate in a CTE panel presentation or similar event during or after the course is taught, to share results with the campus community.

Stipend is $2,000 and will be supplemented by staff support from the CDH. Full-time faculty members at USC Columbia and any of the four regional campuses are eligible to apply. To qualify for funding, the course must already be approved and have been offered at least once.

Application Process

To apply, applicants must submit a proposal, current CV and draft syllabus. The proposal should be 800-1000 words (excluding draft syllabus and CV). When discussing digital projects or tools, please be as specific as you can be, although it is not necessary to list individual software, technical standards, or languages by name, unless you are already conversant with them. Please also include a letter from department chair or program director confirming that the new version of the course you propose fits within curriculum guidelines.

Proposals will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Completeness of application.
  • Clear and pedagogically sound rationale for the project.
  • Feasibility of completing the project in the time proposed.
  • Likely impact and sustainability of the proposed course.

For more information, contact the CDH at wildercf@mailbox.sc.edu or the CTE at 777-8322 or cte@sc.edu.

This opportunity is sponsored by the Center for Digital Humanities and the Center for Teaching Excellence.
