Flipped Course Development Grants

Next Call for Grant Proposals in Fall 2016

Guidelines

The Center for Teaching Excellence, with support from the Office of the Provost, invites full-time faculty to submit proposals for the development of exemplary flipped courses that employ innovative pedagogy with related online tools and learning technologies. Eligible projects may include completely new courses or the conversion of an existing course (or portion of a course) to a flipped learning format—defined as the delivery of a significant portion of the academic content through online instruction or through interactive online tools that facilitate learning outside the classroom. The associated class time is then used for highly engaging, interactive learning activities such as problem-solving, case-study discussions, team-based project work, or other forms of active learning.

Funding may be requested for projects in either of two categories:

Individual Courses: Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded for the development of a single flipped course, or
development of a significant flipped component for a single course.

Multi-course or Large Multi-section Courses: Grants of up to $7,500 will be provided for the development of a
new course model or delivery approach and implementation or a sequence (2 or more) of courses or a large multi-section course to serve a larger institutional objective. The objective may serve a particular program, department, or college—or a particular type of course. Examples might include (but are not limited to):

  1. Flipped content for multi-section large enrollment courses
  2. Effective use of interactive online peer activities or trans-section discussion tools for multi-section courses, or
  3. Online demos or modules for large-section laboratory courses

In addition to funding, grantees will receive instructional design support from the CTE Instructional Design team and support for assessment development as needed from the Office of Assessment and Compliance.

Grant recipients will:

  • Meet as a group with fellow grant recipients and the CTE Faculty Associate Director for Innovative Teaching at least four times to share ideas, discuss current literature and best practices in flipped pedagogy, and workshop individual or group projects as they develop. These meetings will occur on the Columbia campus.
  • Consult with a CTE instructional designer throughout the project development process to ensure that materials
developed meet university guidelines for design quality and ADA accessibility.
  • Develop and administer appropriate assessments to gauge the effectiveness of the project and to guide continuous
improvement of the materials developed.
  • Teach the proposed course or materials within a designated time frame.
  • Participate in a campus-wide panel presentation or similar event to share project results.

Application Process

To apply, submit the Application Cover Sheet and Budget [doc], a two-to-three page proposal and a current CV. The proposal should include the following information:

  1. A description of the targeted course or courses
  2. The goals of the planned project and their relationship to the course learning outcomes
  3. The proposed strategies for incorporating flipped learning into the course or courses
  4. A description of the activities to be accomplished during the grant period, and
  5. The applicant’s general philosophy or approach to flipped pedagogy and how this is advanced by the project.

Proposals will be evaluated by the following criteria:

  • Completeness of application and conformity to guidelines.
  • Clear and pedagogically coherent rationale for the project.
  • Clear articulation of the potential to enrich the student learning experience.
  • Feasibility of completing the project in the time proposed and with the funds available.
  • Likely impact and sustainability of the proposed course or materials.
