Financial Aid and Scholarships

Federal Direct PLUS

For parents and graduate students, there are loans available that are not based on need. After you've created a budget and explored all of your options, determine if a Direct PLUS loan is the right move for you. Payment plan arrangements are available.

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan

The Federal Direct Parent PLUS loan is not based on need. Through this program, parents of dependent undergraduate students can borrow up to the student’s cost of attendance minus any other aid the student receives. The student must be making satisfactory academic progress and be enrolled at least half time in a degree-seeking program. The parent borrower is responsible for repayment. Repayment will begin 60 days after the final disbursement of the loan. Parents can defer payment as long as the student is enrolled at least half time.

In addition to completing the FAFSA, borrowing for this loan requires the parent to apply on Studentloans.gov. Parents are subject to a credit inquiry that remains valid for 180 days.

Credit Inquiry Results

  • If the credit decision is approved, our office will be notified and the loan will be processed.
  • If the parent’s credit inquiry results in an adverse credit decision, our office will be notified and the student may become eligible for additional unsubsidized loan funds. The amount of the unsubsidized loan is limited by cost of attendance and annual loan limits.
  • Parents with an adverse credit decision do have the option to appeal the decision or secure an endorser. If approved, in addition to completing the master promissory note, the borrower must also complete PLUS counseling before the loan will be disbursed.
  • Endorsers must sign an endorser addendum electronically on Studentloans.gov.
  • If the parent borrower appeals the credit decision, the process could take up to 10 business days before the financial aid office is notified of a credit decision.

Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan

The Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan is not need based. Graduate students and professional students can borrow up to their cost of attendance minus any other aid the student receives. The student must be making satisfactory academic progress and be enrolled at least half time in a degree-seeking program. Repayment starts 60 days after the final disbursement of the loan, but there is an option to defer payments until the student is no longer enrolled at least half time.

In addition to completing the FAFSA, borrowing for this loan requires the student to apply on studentloans.gov. Students are subject to a credit inquiry that remains valid for 180 days. An applicant cannot be rejected for a Direct Graduate PLUS Loan because they have no credit history.

Credit Inquiry Results

  • If the credit decision is approved, our office will be notified and the loan will be processed.
  • If the student is denied, our office will be notified and the student may submit an appeal or obtain an endorser through studentloans.gov. If approved, in addition to completing the master promissory note, the borrower must also complete PLUS counseling before the loan will be disbursed.
  • Endorsers must sign an endorser addendum electronically on Studentloans.gov.
  • If the student appeals the credit decision, the process could take up to 10 business days before the financial aid office is notified of a credit decision.
