Galen Health Fellows

Conceived by Provost Joan Gabel, Galen Health Fellows is a new and novel community at the University of South Carolina. We offer one of the most comprehensive programs for health professions studies in the United States.

Our Mission

The Galen Health Fellows Living & Learning Community fosters a trans-disciplinary residential environment for undergraduate students pursuing a career in the healthcare profession. Students will develop relationships with peers, faculty, staff and local healthcare professionals through service-learning, mentorship and beyond-the-classroom experiences.

Who was Galen?

A well-read scholar with a curious mind that led him to become the leading authority in medical theory, Galen was a highly-esteemed physician, surgeon and philosopher during the reign of the Roman Empire. His theories held court for more than 1,400 years and his philosophic and theoretical writings influenced the development of a variety of scientific disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and neurology. Galen's legacy embodies our vision for Galen Health Fellows. He was curious and open-minded. He loved to read, study and observe patterns and relationships in the world in order to make novel connections.
