Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)

The Emerging Leaders Program is designed for administrative professionals who are currently serving in a supervisory or management position, and who have the potential to hold a higher-level administrative leadership position at UofSC in the near future.


To participate in this program, administrative professionals must be working in a full-time staff position at the university. Supervisory experience and/or completion of the LEAD supervisory training program is strongly recommended, but is not required.

Application and Selection Process

There are two ways for applicants to be considered for the Emerging Leaders Program: 

  • Applicants can be nominated by the leadership of their division, college or school.
  • Applicants may apply directly for the program, if they include an endorsement from their leadership indicating support for their application and a commitment to cover the cost of the program.

Nominations and endorsements must come from a department head, department chair, dean, provost, vice provost, associate vice president or vice president.

All nominees and applicants must complete a formal application [pdf] which must be signed by the supervisor or department head and then forwarded to the Organizational and Professional Development Office, located at 1600 Hampton Street, Suite 101, Columbia. S.C. 29208. A review committee appointed by the Vice President of Human Resources reviews all applications and a cohort of 24 persons are selected each year.

Program Participation Requirements

Program participants are required to attend 90% or more of the leadership sessions that run from August to April in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants are also required to participate in peer group coaching sessions and a project that may involve additional meeting time outside of the scheduled leadership sessions.

A 360° feedback process is conducted which requires participants to meet with a coaching mentor from the Organizational and Professional Development Office to discuss the results. An Individual Development Plan is created based upon the 360° feedback process and coaching conversations.


A non‐refundable fee of $850 is charged to the department, if the applicant is selected to participate. This fee is used solely to cover Emerging Leaders Program expenses including speaker fees, training materials and other costs.

Application and Program Timeline

Nominations occur in May-June of each year and participants are notified of their selection in late to mid-July. The ELP program follows the academic year, running from mid-August through the end of April.
