MLK Days of Service

Each year we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a series of events held throughout the month of January. Join hands with your Carolina community to honor Dr. King’s life and to work together to help others.

Annual MLK Events

Each year, we remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a slate of annual events plus special seminars and other learning experiences that continue to spead his vision and work.

Register to attend these events via GarnetGate.

Jan. 15: King Day at the Dome Rally

The university joins the SC NAACP and the Columbia community for the annual King Day at the Dome Rally. The day begins with a morning march to the SC State House where you'll join others for the King Day at the Dome Rally.

Jan. 15-16: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich-Making Competition

The Arc of South Carolina, the Best Buddies organization, and the Leadership and Service Center have collaborated for a second year to bring a unique opportunity for students to get involved. On Jan. 15 and 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Russell House Ballroom, students can drop in to take part in a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich-Making Competition. Participants have the chance to win some prizes!  All PB&J's made during the four hours will be brought to the 153 Project, a local organization that feeds many people in need every Wednesday night at Finlay Park. Last year, over 650 PB&J's were made. Come help us break our record!

Jan. 16: Special Guest Payton Head

Payton Head is a recent graduate of the University of Missouri where he represented 28,000 students as President of the student government. In the aftermath of Ferguson, he spearheaded conversations about improving race relations in Missouri. Head’s viral Facebook post detailing his experience with racism at Mizzou ignited students to fight for a more inclusive campus and shook up the world of higher education. Head was awarded an NAACP Image Award on the mantra “Courage Will Not Skip this Generation,” and he was featured in Spike Lee’s ESPN documentary “2 Fists UP.”  Join us as we welcome former Missouri Students Association president, activist, and diversity and inclusion advocate, Payton Head. Payton will give a keynote in the Russell House Theater on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m.

Jan. 16-19: 5th Annual MLK Food Drive

Our annual food drive helps fill the Gamecock Pantry, a campus food pantry created for students by students to serve the UofSC community with food assistance and resources for wellbeing. We will be tabling Tuesday, Jan. 16, through Friday, Jan. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at the Gamecock Pantry or at our table on Greene St.
