Students participate in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week events designed to raise awareness and serve the community.

At this interactive event, the place where you sit, and the meal that you eat, are determined by the luck of the draw — just as in real life some of us are born into relative prosperity and others into poverty.

Impact Weekly Service Trip

Volunteers will be helping out with any needs at Harvest Hope Food Bank, whether that be restocking items, cleaning or administrative needs. Transportation is provided.
Time: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Line Screening and Discussion Panel

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017
Screen the newest film from Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Linda Midgett, The Line, which was produced as part of a broader campaign to bring light to the new faces of poverty and the aftermath of the recession. Representatives from Homeless No More, Transitions, United Way, Meals on Wheels and Richland 1 School District will engage students in dialogue about issues of homelessness and hunger.

Feeding the Homeless at Finlay Park

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017
Each Wednesday night, 153 Project serves a warm meal in Finlay Park in downtown Columbia, SC.  Rain or shine, the team gathers to provide a meal, the Gospel message, worship, and prayer for the poor.  Students can help with bagging food boxes, serving dessert or drinks, or anything else that is needed. 
Time: 7:30-9 p.m.
Location: Meet at LSC (RHUU 2nd floor)

Service Trip to Meals on Wheels

Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017
Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers hot nutritious meals to elderly, frail, and home-bound individuals. Meals are delivered with a smile by a caring volunteer five days a week.
Time: Noon-2 p.m.
Location: Provide your own tranportation to 2817 Millwood Ave.

Give Thanks with Alpha Gam

Join Alpha Gamma Delta to celebrate what you're thankful for and enjoy a Thanksgiving-inspired meal. All ticket proceeds will go to fight hunger in our community. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased from any member.

Transitions Block Party

Carolina Homelessness Outreach has worked closely with the residents of Transitions and are now hosting an interactive Day of Games and Music. Volunteers and participants will partake in cornhole tournaments, bingo, cards and more! Snacks such as popcorn will be provided. The face-to-face discussions and interactions with real members of the homeless community provide students a chance to break down stereotypes and make a difference.
