Scholarships and Awards

The University of South Carolina's Palmetto College offers a variety of scholarships. The Palmetto College Scholarship Committee is responsible for selecting recipients. In addition, each campus as well as USC Fort Jackson have other scholarships available to students.

Palmetto College Student Awards

David L. Burggraf Award

The David L. Burggraf Award is given in recognition of the student, 25 years of age or older, with
the highest GPA in the liberal studies, organizational leadership or elementary education degree
programs of Palmetto College. The award is named for David Burggraf, former director of Adult
Student Services, who devoted most of his career to the success of adult students at USC.

Alpha Sigma Lambda National Student Honor Society

USC’s Palmetto College sponsors the Mu Gamma chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national student honor society for adult students. Membership in ASL is by invitation only, and students must attend an induction ceremony, held each spring, in order to become members. Students who meet the eligibility requirements will receive an invitation during the spring semester to attend the induction ceremony.

Student members must be currently matriculated students in a USC Columbia-based Palmetto College degree program—currently Elementary Education, Liberal Studies, Library and Information Science, or Organizational Leadership, and have completed at least 24 hours at USC. At least twelve credits of student’s total credits should be earned in courses in Liberal Arts/Sciences, not including applied Arts/Sciences courses. Accepted transfer courses may be added to the 24 credits earned at USC until the Liberal Arts/Sciences requirements are fully satisfied. Student members are selected from the highest twenty percent of the students who have twenty-four graded credits and are matriculated in the programs listed above, based on institutional grade point average.

Palmetto College Scholarships

The University of South Carolina's Palmetto College offers a variety of scholarships. The Palmetto College Scholarship Committee is responsible for selecting recipients. In addition, each campus as well as USC Fort Jackson have other scholarships available to students.
Awards will be split equally between the fall and spring semesters, unless you are graduating in December. You are responsible for committing award monies through Self Service Carolina and, unless otherwise stipulated, must be enrolled as a full-time student in the Liberal Studies or Organizational Leadership program as indicated on your application at the time of the scholarship. Monies are distributed towards tuition.

Application Required

Continuing Student Scholarship

Awarded to an adult continuing student that is at least 25 years of age and a resident of South Carolina. USC cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher. Must be enrolled in the spring semester of the application semester in the Liberal Studies or Organizational Leadership programs. May be full-time or part-time.

Returning Adult Incentive Scholarship

Awarded to an adult student that is at least 25 years of age. USC cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher. As per university policy, incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA from their previous institutions. The spring semester of the application or the subsequent fall semester must be the first semester in school, not having attended any institution of higher learning for at least one year. Must be fully admitted to USC to be considered, in either the Liberal Studies or Organizational Leadership degree programs. May be full-time or part-time.

Harriett M. Hurt Adult Student Student Scholarship

Awarded to an adult continuing student that is at least 25 years of age and a resident of South Carolina.

Robert V. Phillips Palmetto College Military Endowed Scholarship Fund

Awarded to military students enrolled in either the Associate degree program at USC Fort Jackson or one of the Palmetto College online bachelor’s degree programs. Award preference will be assigned as follows: 1. Active duty enlisted soldiers; 2. Military service veterans; 3. National Guardsmen; 4. Reservists; 5. Spouses of active-duty military. No Application Required

The following scholarships are awarded to eligible students who annually who meet the criteria established by the donor gift agreements, and are awarded according to available funds.

Mary B. Sturdevant Adult Scholarship

Awarded to an adult continuing student that is at least 25 years of age and a resident of South Carolina. No application required. All eligible students will be considered.

Mildred and Claude Vaughn Adult Student Scholarship

Awarded to an adult continuing student that is at least 25 years of age and a resident of South Carolina. No application required. All eligible students will be considered.

Nicholas and Gartha Mitchell Adult Student Scholarship

Awarded to an adult continuing student that is at least 25 years of age and a resident of South Carolina. No application required. All eligible students will be considered.
