Study Skills Tips
Tip 1: Know what learning and study strategies work for you and how to become a more strategic learner.
- Complete the LASSI (Learning and Study Skills Inventory) online to learn more about your strengths as a learner and areas of potential improvement at

- Discuss your LASSI results and strategies for improvement with an ACE Academic Success Coach. Schedule an appointment here:
- Another way to learn more about specific study strategies is to use the LASSI modules. These free, mini online courses offer information on specific academic success topics (i.e., time management, test preparation, information processing, improving concentration). Visit the LASSI modules here:

Tip 2: Study 2 hours for every 1 hour in class.
The amount of studying required in college is more than that required in high school. Make study time a top priority.
Reflect….
Generally I study ____ (minutes / hours) a day.
I should be studying ___ hours each day (class hours x 2).
Tip 3: Review your notes immediately following each class.
By reviewing your notes after each class you are more likely to retain the information and can also identify questions you have about the material.
Tip 4: Rewrite your notes.
Rewriting your notes reinforces the material and provides an opportunity to supplement your notes with information from the chapter or your own examples. If possible, rewrite your notes immediately after each class.
Tip 5: Identify your most productive study time and surroundings.
Determine when you are most focused and most productive in your studying (time of day, location).
Reflect:
When I study, I:
(Consider your ideal surroundings, your study methods, time of day, etc.)
Tip 6: Form a study group.
Attend Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions or form your own study group to discuss concepts learned in class. More information about SI can be found at: http://www.sa.sc.edu/supplementalinstruction/index.htm
Tip 7: Set realistic academic goals and an action plan.
Examine the courses you are taking this semester and complete this chart, reflecting on your academic goals and steps you will take to achieve them.
Tip 8: Explore other resources.
