About the Program

Diversity, quality education, and a wide variety of courses that cover the spectrum of the discipline are what you’ll find most appealing about the University of South Carolina Department of Art. We offer numerous opportunities for students, while keeping student-faculty ratios low enough to ensure individual attention. The Department of Art is made up of four divisions: art education, art history, art studio (includes design), and media arts. If you plan a career in teaching, you may wish to consider the art education option.

Art History
Art history majors generally pursue careers in gallery or museum administration, teaching, or working within historical organizations. The Bachelor of Arts curriculum in art history gives students a broad knowledge of Western art and the cultures that generate it. The Division of Art History offers courses in the fields of ancient, medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, modern, American, Asian, and African art. In addition, surveys and special-topics courses in art history are offered on a regular basis. All courses are taught by the faculty, with graduate assistants serving as tutorial leaders. The major requires 120 semester hours.
