Freshmen are required to live on campus. This encourages you take advantage of all of Carolina's resources. The proximity, convenience and the ability to get and stay connected to the University and its resources are best accomplished by living on campus. Research shows that students who live on campus at USC are almost two times more likely to return to the University the following year than those students living off campus.
Freshmen can live in one of eleven freshmen centers. All residence halls are air-conditioned, with internet and cable t.v. service. Many have computer centers and all are equipped with laundry facilities. Residences may be suite style, hall style, or apartment style. The University offers both single gender and co-ed options.
You can also choose to live in a particular learning community in a specific residence hall. Carolina has several communities: pre-med, international, engineering and technology, future educators, the French House, pre-law, and Music, among others. Students in learning communities have access to specialized academic support services and help to support each other in study groups and shared classes.
Honors College students and Capstone Scholars room in their own specific residence halls, Maxcy and Capstone House or Columbia Hall, respectively. A new honors residence is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2009. These residences provide an opportunity for students to enjoy the same close connection they experience in their Honors and Capstone classes. These residence halls enjoy unique clubs and lectures.
If you care about the environment, Carolina may have the perfect home for you. The Green Quad is a newly constructed building, built according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. Residents can dine at a green café, and practice energy and water conversation. Green Quad is one of the only college residence halls built to such environmentally-conscious standards, and other buildings on campus, including the new Honors residence, are being built to LEED standards.
The University offers UCHOOSE, an online service designed to help you find the perfect roommate. UCHOOSE will allow you to find a roommate based on your criteria (how social you are, what kind of schedule you keep, etc). You can use UCHOOSE once you have enrolled and applied for on-campus housing.
