Our international students often want to know what they can expect to experience in Columbia, SC, where the University is located. Many of our students are often surprised at how warmly they are welcomed in the city.

The City of Columbia is one of the fastest growing cities in the Southeast. With a metropolitan-area population of more than 700,000, there are plenty of attractions and things to do. The University is in the heart of downtown, and our convenient location gives students plenty of options for enjoying life both on and off campus.

Columbia's historic downtown is filled with restaurants, unique shops, state government offices, and the commercialism you would find in a large city. Yet, Columbia is known for its southern hospitality and its ability to reach out the USC Community. Many of our students have jobs and internships within blocks of our campus. And, students certainly enjoy Columbia's geographic location. The Appalachian Mountains are about three hours to the north, while the Atlantic Ocean is about a two-hour drive to the south.

• Lake Murray, the largest man-made lake in the United States, is a 20-minute trip from our campus. Students take advantage of our great weather and enjoy the lake throughout the year.
• Columbia Riverfront Park is a five-minute drive from campus. It is a great place for a jog or picnic, and it offers wonderful views of the Congaree River and Columbia Canal.
• The Congaree Vista is a centerpiece of Columbia's downtown. Students will find many restaurants, shops, and galleries in this area located a few blocks from campus.
• Five Points, a unique village of shops, restaurants, and clubs, is also a block from campus. Five Points is also home to Columbia's St. Patrick's Day Festival, one of the largest festivals in the Southeast.
