Windows 2000:Release 8.2 (TS2M0) of the SAS System is supported on Windows 2000 Professional and all Windows 2000 Server EditionsWindows NT and Windows NT Server: Release 8.2 of the SAS System requires Windows NT, Version 4.0 updated with Service Pack 4 or higher (excluding Service Pack 6), plus additional Year 2000 software updates as provided by Microsoft. Administrator privilege is strongly recommended.
Windows: Release 8.2 of the SAS System is supported on Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows ME, and the 32-bit version Microsoft Windows XP operating systems. Windows 95 must be updated with additional Year 2000 software updates as provided by Microsoft. Windows 98 must be updated with Service Pack 1 or to Windows 98, Second Edition.
The use of file systems supporting long filenames is required.
For Windows NT, NTFS is recommended.
Long filename support is required on any Windows NT server, or Windows 2000 server, or Novell 2000 Server where a Server Installation is performed.
To view the online help within the SAS System, either Internet Explorer, Version 4.01 or Netscape Navigator 4.73 is required. Later versions of either of these Web browsers should also be usable. However, Netscape Navigator, Version 6 has not been tested with the online help within the SAS System. It is recommended that Internet Explorer, Version 5 be installed because this will update certain Microsoft system files and greatly reduce the number of reboots required.
Intel or Intel-compatible Pentium class processor (minimum required).
Floating Point Unit or Math Coprocessor: A floating point unit or math coprocessor is assumed present in the PC and the SAS System is optimized for its presence. Microsoft Windows provides floating point emulation software with decreased performance in the absence of a floating point unit or math coprocessor.
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows XP, and Windows 2000 Professional:64 MB minimum, or more for improved performance.
64 MB minimum of swapfile spaceWindows NT Server and Windows 2000 Server Editions:
256 MB minimum
256 MB minimum of swapfile space
IMPORTANT: The Version 8 SAS System does not support multiple copies of the SAS System on a single machine. Therefore, you must either update any existing Version 8 installation or uninstall it. The Windows utility Add/Remove Programs must be used for removal of an existing Version 8 Installation. If you choose to install this release of the SAS System onto an existing installation of version 8, the following items will be detected and preserved:
SAS System Setup Online Help
The Installation program provides online help for you to use at any time during the installation process. To access the online help, select the Help button or press the F1 key at any time while the SAS System setup is running.
The System Requirements Wizard
The System requirements Wizard makes sure the minimum system requirements are installed on your computer before the SAS System is installed. The System Requirements wizard may update system components that are part of the operating system. If some of the system components are in use by the operating system, it will be necessary to reboot the computer.
To start the System Requirements Wizard:
1. Close all non-essential Windows applications. Be sure to terminate any anti-virus software that may be running.
2. Insert the SAS 8.2 CD-ROM labeled "Setup Disk" into the source drive. The SAS AutoPlay should appear if AutoPlay is enabled on your computer. If this does not happen, select the Run menu option from the Start menu and type:
source_drive:\SETUP
where source_drive is the drive containing the SAS System installation media.
3. To update your computer to the minimum system requirements for the SAS System, select the System Requirement Wizard option.
4. A complete list of all system components that need to be updated will be displayed. Click Next.
If the computer already satisfies the minimum system requirements, a dialog will appear indicating that no updates are required.
5. The update process will begin for any system components listed in step 4. Some system components may require a reboot of the computer.
6. When all system components have been updated, a dialog will appear stating that the computer has been updated.
Installing the SAS System
SAS Setup should be run during an initial SAS System installation and when you are adding additional components to an existing SAS System installation.
Note: Updating SAS SETINIT during Installation of the SAS System
If the SETINIT.SSS file that is found on installation CD
appears correct to SAS Setup program, the product authorization update is
executed automatically during the installation process. If the SAS Setup program
determines that the SETINIT.SSS is expired or invalid, SAS Setup allows you to
specify a directory path containing a valid SETNIT.SSS. Detailed instructions
are in the Personal Installation Section.
There are several types of Installation Configurations
The installation for personal use is the most common of the installation types, and the one described in this handout. For information about the other types of installations, refer to the Installation Instruction section of the CD-ROM labeled "Setup Disk".
The different types of installations are:
Installing the SAS System for personal use: designed to copy the SAS program files onto the user's local hard drive.
Installing the SAS System as a Client: used to run the SAS system on a PC from SAS System files that are present on a network file server.
Installing SAS onto a Server: the Network administrator may install the SAS system onto a server.
Performing a Personal Installation **(Recommended for single users)**
To start the SAS System installation process:
If this does not happen, select the Run menu option form the Start menu and type:
source_drive:\SETUP
where source_drive is the drive containing the SAS System installation media.
3. Select the SAS System Setup option

A window will be displayed showing the current location of the setinit.sss file on the CD drive (usually the D:\ drive).
"Setup will apply this license following the file copy process".
At this point:
Insert the
diskette containing the new setinit.sss file into the diskette drive and use the Browse button to specify a:\ as the the location of the new SAS setinit file. Click OK. You will then see the dialog box with the same message about the expired license, but the window will display a:\ .Click the
Next Button to update the license information. You will then be returned the to Setup process.6. A screen asking to select a type of installation is displayed. Select Custom installation and then click Next.
7. If this is the first product from SAS that you have installed on your system, you will be presented with the SAS Institute Shared Files dialog. It is recommended that you use the default destination. Click on Next.
8. Several dialog boxes will appear asking you to select Destination Location, Data Files folder, Temporary files folder, and Program folder. It is recommended to accept the default. Click Next.
9. When the Solutions: Select the Solutions you wish to install dialog box appears, select Customize.

If the SAS Setup program determines that additional installation options are available, windows for the additional installation options will be displayed. After all of the SAS System files have been copied, each of these installation options will launch another setup program. Once these external setup programs are finished, you will be returned to SAS System Setup.
When installing Base SAS software, Setup will prompt you to install the SAS System Viewer. The application lets you view the contents of SAS data set and catalog files without using the SAS System or requiring the SAS System to be installed on your machine. You are free to distribute this program to allow other people to view your SAS data.
The SAS ODBC Driver allows you to access, update, and manipulate SAS data from your favorite ODBC-compliant applications, such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Visual Basic, and PowerBuilder. The SAS ODBC Driver provides read access to databases such as IBM DB2 and ORACLE via SAS/ACCESS software running on remote SAS servers. Further, SAS views can be defined to join database tables from different vendors, creating a virtual data warehouse for your ODBC-enabled applications.
