The General Assembly passes legislation directing the trustees of the South Carolina College to "provide for admitting young women to enter the college." The following summer the faculty voted to admit women and the administration granted permission to Frances Guignard Gibbes to take a special course. Gibbes thus became the first woman to attend the institution, though she was not in a degree-granting program. She became an accomplished poet and writer.
