On November 12 at 11:00 a.m., a rainy Thursday, a football team from Clemson Agricultural College kicks off to a team from South Carolina College on the state fairgrounds (then along Elmwood Avenue) in front of a crowd of 2,000. This began the famed "Big Thursday" football series between South Carolina's two largest public colleges. Carolina won this meeting 12-6, and while this first game was a relatively minor event at a state fair where horseraces were the main attraction, the "Big Thursday" game became a tradition which lasted until 1959. Pictured is C. H. McLaurin, captain for the 1896 team.
