PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Byzantine Studies Conference is an annual forum for the presentation

and discussion of papers embodying the current research on all aspects of

Byzantine history and culture. All sessions will be held at the

University of Kentucky Student Center, located about one mile from the

Radisson Plaza Hotel. See enclosed map for locations.

REGISTRATION FEE

The registration fee includes all sessions and conference materials, all

refreshment breaks, two receptions (Thursday and Friday), and transporta- tion

between the Radisson and the conference sessions at the UK campus.

REFUNDS

Registration fees will be refunded in full if written notification of

withdrawal is postmarked or faxed to UK Conferences & Institutes

(see reverse side for address and fax number) by October 22, 1998.

A $25 administrative fee will be charged to all requests for refunds

after October 22. Sorry, no refunds for the business lunch or banquet

after October 22.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

If you have paid your membership dues through 1998, an 8 or higher will

appear as the last number on the top of your mailing label and no

membership dues are required.

If the last number of your mailing label is 7 or lower, please remit your

membership dues with your registration fees.

LEXINGTON

Lexington, in the heart of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, is the horse

capital of the world. Every aspect of the horse world can be found in

Lexington. With a population of 235,000, the Lexington metropolitan area

offers the cultural advantages of a large city with easy access to beauti- ful

rolling hills. The downtown area has shops, museums, parks and restaurants

to entertain visitors. The University of Kentucky's 716-acre campus is

located just south of downtown Lexington.

TRAVEL TO LEXINGTON

Lexington is easily accessible by car or plane and is situated at the

intersection of two major interstate highways: I-75 and I-64. Although

the Lexington Blue Grass Airport is served by many airlines, the

Cincinnati and Louisville airports are only an 80-minute drive from

Lexington.

RADISSON PLAZA HOTEL

Located in the heart of downtown Lexington, the Radisson is about one

mile from the University of Kentucky campus and a ten-minute drive

from Lexington's Blue Grass Airport. The Radisson, a President's Award

winning hotel for excellence in service and luxurious facilities,

offers an indoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, exercise room, free airport

limousine service, free self-parking in an enclosed garage, valet service, restaurant, and wheelchair-accessible rooms.

Be sure to mention the Byzantine Studies Conference in order to receive

the special rate. Reservations must be made by the cut-off date in order

to guarantee the special rate. The Byzantine Studies Conference will

provide bus transportation from the Radisson to the UK campus and return.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Opening Reception

The opening reception will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 pm

at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Refreshments and cash bar.

Friday Reception The Friday evening reception will be held from 7:00-

9:30 pm at the Hunt-Morgan

House, a Federal period town house built in 1814, located in the midst of

the antebellum splendor of Gratz Park in historic downtown Lexington, a few

blocks from the Radisson. The house features a three-story cantilevered staircase, garden, walled courtyard and the museum's collection of fine

Kentucky furniture, 19th century portraits, and porcelains. Hors

d'oeuvres and cash bar. Dinner on your own.

Business Lunch

The annual business lunch will be held Saturday at the University of

Kentucky Student Center. Cost is $12; please complete the appropriate

line on the registration form. All reservations for the business

lunch must be made by October 15; sorry, no refunds will be given

after October 22.

Banquet

The Banquet will be held Saturday evening at 7:00 pm at the Headley-

Whitney Museum, a diversified collection of fine arts which includes

the Jewel Room, Shell Grotto, and the Oriental Gallery. Guests will

have the opportunity to visit portions of the museum during the evening. Cost: $35. The cost of the banquet includes round-trip transportation between the Radisson and the Headley-Whitney Museum. Please complete

the appropriate line on the registration form. All reservations for

the banquet must be made by October 15; sorry, no refunds will be given

after October 22.

Tours

Tours of the Bluegrass region are being offered on Thursday afternoon

through a local tour agency. See the separate enclosure for

registration and additional information about the tours.

TOUR INFORMATION

Tour I: Bluegrass Country

Enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing through the Bluegrass where you'll see

rolling pastures and famous horse farms such as Calumet, Manchester, Buck- ram Oak, and

others, with a stop at a private horse farm. Tour also includes

Keeneland Race Course, the Man O'War statue at the Kentucky Horse Park, and a

driving tour of historic downtown Lexington. Cost: $16 per person. Price

includes transportation, guide, all admission fees (where applicable), tax- es

and gratuities.

Tour II: Taste of Kentucky Tour

1:30 to 5:00 pm

Visit Old Kentucky Chocolates where award-winning bourbon chocolates are

made, and see the equipment and process first hand -- with lots of samples too! Our

next stop will be at Labrot & Graham distillery, the oldest distillery site

in Kentucky, where you'll see the process of fermenting, brewing, bottling and

aging of a variety of bourbons. Cost: $16 per person. Price includes

transportation, guide, all admission fees (where applicable), taxes and

gratuities.
