Associate’s Degree Programs

Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Degrees

The Salkehatchie campus of the University of South Carolina offers the Associate in Arts degree and the Associate in Science degree to those students who have earned 60 hours of credit approved by the dean of the Salkehatchie campus. Note: Developmental courses may not be used for credit toward any degree at USC. These degrees are awarded to those students who have completed the following requirements:

In addition to the requirements stated above, a student must also:

1. obtain a 2.00 GPA (does not include course grades earned by challenge examinations);

2. earn the last 15 semester hours at a USC campus.

Baccalaureate Degree Programs

Many students who enter the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science degree programs intend to apply these credits toward a baccalaureate degree awarded by another institution. These students are advised to work closely with their advisor to outline a program of study for the first two years that will meet preliminary requirements of the four-year major they wish to pursue.

Academic Programs

Students enrolled at USC Salkehatchie can complete the requirements for four bachelor’s degree programs that are formally awarded by other institutions.

Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education program is conducted in partnership with USC Aiken. The core requirements are completed as USC Salkehatchie courses. The upper-level courses can also be completed at the USC Salkehatchie campus but are USC Aiken courses taught by USC Aiken faculty.

Bachelor of Arts in Education—Major in Elementary Education

The Elementary Education Program provides preparation for teaching in public school grades 2-6. Each candidate is given practical experience with children of different age levels and in different types of public school settings.

The Junior Block, Senior Block, and Internship are sequential. A grade of C or better is required in all courses as a prerequisite for enrollment in coursework at the next level.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is conducted in partnership with the College of Nursing at USC Columbia. General education and lower-level courses (first two years) are completed as USC Salkehatchie courses. Upper-level nursing courses are offered on the USC Salkehatchie campus through USC Columbia, with most clinical practice in local hospitals and clinics.

Degree Requirements

(128 hours)

Lower Division Courses: English (6 hours); social sciences (6 hours); analytical reasoning (6 hours); CHEM 102 and BIOL 243, 244, 330 (16 hours); history (3 hours); fine arts (3 hours); NURS 210, 212, 216, 220, 231, 326 (18 hours); electives (6 hours) (64 total hours)

All lower division courses must be completed before progression to the upper division.

Upper Division Courses: NURS 311, 312, 314, 317, 319, 324, 400, 411, 412, 420, 422, 423, 424, 425, 430, 431, 432, 433, and a nursing elective (64 total hours)

General Education Requirements

General education course selections must meet University general education requirements.

English: ENGL 101-102 or higher

Social Sciences: Two courses from one of these: sociology or psychology. One course must cover life-span content.

Analytical Reasoning: To be satisfied in one of the following ways: 1) STAT 110 and MATH 122 or 2) STAT 110 and STAT 201.

Foreign Language: Students must demonstrate ability in a foreign language equivalent to that obtained by two years of high-school study of one language. This ability may be demonstrated by placing at level two or higher on the Foreign Language Placement Exam for the language studied in high school. Those failing to do so must satisfactorily complete equivalent study of a foreign language at USC. These students must pass 109 and 110 in French, German, Latin, or Spanish or 121 and 122 in any of the other languages.

Electives: UNIV 101 is strongly recommended.

Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies program, as other Palmetto Programs, is conducted following a blended delivery method consisting of traditional classrooms, two-way video, and online courses taught by faculty members from USC Salkehatchie and the other regional campuses of the University of South Carolina (Continuing Education, Lancaster, Sumter, and Union). All courses an be taken at the USC Salkehatchie campus. The degree is awarded by Continuing Education at USC Columbia.

1) MATH 122 or 141 with either CSCE 101 or STAT 110 or PHIL 110
2) MATH 122 or 141 with a higher level math course such as MATH 170 or 172

2. Major Requirements (36 hours)

Required Courses
All courses must be at the 300-level or above with at least 15 hours at the 400-level or above. All grades must be C or better.
The following three courses are required of all majors:
PALM 493 South Carolina Studies
PALM 494 Internship
UNIV P401P Senior Capstone Experience

The student's major will be chosen from one of the following three (3) options:

Arts and Humanities Option
A minimum of 27 hours from two of the following disciplines: art, English, history, languages, philosophy, religious studies, theatre (27 hours)

Science and Mathematics Option
A minimum of 27 hours from two of the following disciplines: astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental studies, geology, marine science, mathematics, physics, statistics (27 hours)

Social and Behavioral Sciences Option
A minimum of 27 hours from two of the following disciplines: anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, sociology (27 hours)

3. Cognate (12 hours)
A minimum of 12 hours of course work at the 300 level or above from one of the following disciplines: anthropology, art, business, criminal justice, dance, economics, education, English, geography, history, languages, mathematics, philosophy, political science, psychology, physical and/or biological sciences, religious studies, social work, sociology, theatre. The cognate cannot be a discipline included in the student's major option. (12 hours)

4. Electives (21-31 hours)

Bachelor of Arts in Technology Support and Training Management

The Bachelor of Arts in Technology Support and Training Management is conducted in partnership with the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management. General education and lower-level courses (first two years) are completed at USC Salkehatchie. Upper-level TSTM courses are offered via distance education from the College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management on the USC Columbia Campus. The degree is awarded by USC Columbia.

Seven courses from the College of Arts and Sciences (24-25 hours), to include:
a. one course in history
b. one fine arts class (art, music, theater)
c. SPCH 140
d. one course from PSYC or SOCY
e. ECON 224
f. Foreign Languages: Students shall demonstrate in one foreign language the ability to comprehend the topic and main ideas in written and, with the exception of Latin and Ancient Greek, spoken texts on familiar subjects. This ability can be demonstrated by achieving a score of two or better on a USC foreign language proficiency test. Those failing to do so must satisfactorily complete equivalent study of foreign language at USC.

Mathematics and Sciences (13-15 hours)

Numerical and analytical reasoning (6-7 hours). This requirement may be fulfilled in one of the following ways:

a. MATH 122 or higher and a second higher MATH course, except MATH 221, 222
b. MATH 122 or 141 and an additional course in statistics

Two courses (one of which must have a laboratory) from the following sciences: astronomy, biology, chemistry, geological sciences, marine science, physics. (7-8 hours)

Baccalaureate Degrees Available at the University of South Carolina

Since the USC Salkehatchie campus is part of the University of South Carolina, students utilizing USC Salkehatchie most often enroll at the other USC campuses to complete baccalaureate degrees.

These students are strongly advised to obtain and use a copy of the bulletin for the campus they plan to attend, or visit the University's Web site at www.sc.edu, when determining specific degree requirements.
