USC's Columbia campus will be closed Wednesday (Feb. 12) due to winter weather conditions. University offices will be closed and all classes canceled. Ice and wintry conditions are expected to impact much of South Carolina, including the Midlands. No decision has been made for university operations on Thursday (Feb. 13).
Afternoon and evening classes scheduled for Tuesday (Feb. 11) will continue as scheduled. Night classes will begin as scheduled, but will end at 9 p.m. All events scheduled to begin after 9 p.m. Tuesday are canceled. Monitoring of weather will continue and operational changes may occur if conditions warrant. As always, please use your best judgment regarding existing conditions at your location and personal safety.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the men’s basketball home game against Vanderbilt is scheduled to be played at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The SC Emergency Management Division has instructed, "State government offices and their employees will follow the same winter weather hazard decisions made by the county government officials where the state office is located." Richland County announced the decision earlier Tuesday to close on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued a winter storm warning for the campus from 7 p.m. Tuesday until noon Thursday.
Facilities and Law Enforcement have begun staging resources and making preparations should snow and ice impact our campus. Faculty and staff should exercise judgment in rescheduling meetings planned for Thursday, particularly involving parties traveling from out-of-town. Faculty who have research that is dependent on utilities should note that we are being warned that services may be interrupted. Take appropriate precautions and be prepared to implement your contingency plans if needed.
Please be aware that hazardous conditions may exist on campus throughout the day on Wednesday and some areas of campus may be closed due to icy conditions. Please use caution when walking or driving in and around campus and obey all signs, caution tape, etc.
Finally, while we appreciate the enthusiasm of those employees who generally come to work regardless of weather conditions, please do not put yourself at risk in these icy conditions unless you have been designated as essential personnel by your supervisor.
Please take reasonable steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your family. General tips on preparing for winter weather can be found at Carolina Alert.
