Kim Deal
The hectic pace of working as an assignment editor at WYFF-TV,
the NBC affiliate in Greenville, is just another reason Kim Deal
loves her job.
Deal, a 1979 J-School graduate, has worked as assignment editor
at WYFF for almost 16 years and spent a decade in radio news before
switching to television. Her current responsibilities include:
keeping track of breaking news and scheduled events; coordinating
schedules for reporters and photographers; feeding video to NBC,
CNN and other stations; taking calls from the public; and planning
future coverage.
The intensity of Deal’s job fuels her competitive edge. "I
love being in a position to help us kick the competition’s
butt," she said.
Even when Deal is not working, her competitive side does not take
a break. She spends her free time playing in an adult co-ed soccer
league. Although many of her teammates are "a little past
their prime playing years," Deal said they still have a lot
of fun. She gets in touch with her artistic side playing piano.
Deal has fond memories of her time at USC. Deal recalls the cross-campus
trek from one class to another and the valuable advice and knowledge
the professors imparted. She even came into contact with longtime
U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, who showed up to chat with students who
were camped out to get tickets to a Clemson game.
"It was a wonderful time in my life," she said.
The launch of the College of Mass Communications and Information
Studies’ alumni society offers graduates an opportunity to
make new memories at USC. Deal said she thinks it is a great way
to keep alumni connected or to help them re-connect. |
