Alumni Society launches
mentor program
The
College of Mass Communications and Information Studies Alumni Society
launched a Mentor Program for its alumni and students with a speed
networking event on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Vista Community Room
in the Suggs & Kelly
Law Center.
The event was modeled after speed dating, where each potential
student mentee and alumni mentor had about five minutes to share
what their goals were for this mentor program.
Alumni and students
from both the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and
the School of Library and Information Science attended the event.
In addition, Dean Charles Bierbauer was there to talk to the participants
about why mentoring is so important. Cocky made an appearance to
show his support – he even participated in the speed networking!
This event provided the College’s students and alumni an
opportunity to connect on a professional level. Students told alumni
what they are studying and what their future career goals are.
Alumni told students about their jobs, how they got the jobs they
have and answered the students’ questions about the fields
of journalism and library science.
Refreshments were served and both alumni and students had the
chance to sign up for the Mentor Program and indicate their preference
for a mentee/mentor.
Daylight Doughnuts donated a wide variety of specialty doughnuts
for the participants to enjoy.
The College’s Alumni Society aims to develop, promote, and
facilitate an effective mentoring program that will foster relationships
between alumni and current students of the College of Mass Communications
and Information Studies. This Mentor Program will provide a supportive
forum for students to gain knowledge about career paths, learn
through the experience and expertise of alumni, and develop personal
and professional goals.
