AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Journalist-of-the-Year Award
SCSPA annually recognizes one graduating senior for his/her outstanding contributions to scholastic journalism. Applicants are judged on contributions to their publications, as well as involvement in the community. The SCSPA Journalist of the Year automatically becomes South Carolina's entry in the Journalism Education Association's national competition. Applicants must be student members of SCSPA.
SCSPA Scholarship
SCSPA offers a $1,000 scholarship to graduating seniors who
have been admitted and are planning to attend the USC
School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Applicants are
judged on their scholastic journalism involvement, as well as their
academic achievements while in high school. Applicants must be student members of SCSPA.
Reid H. Montgomery Adviser-of-the-Year Award
Established in memory of Dr. Montgomery, a past director of SCSPA, this award is presented to an adviser who exemplifies a high standard of excellence in service to scholastic journalism. Nominated advisers should demonstrate a high commitment to scholastic journalism on the state, regional and/or national level
Albert T. Scroggins Award
Named after a former Dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications,
this award is presented to an individual or group that has made
outstanding contributions to South Carolina scholastic journalism.
Former advisers, principals and professional reporters have all
received this award in the past. No current adviser may be nominated.
McClatchy Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to minority students pursuing print journalism careers in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Scholarships will be awarded based on need and merit as determined by the School of Journalism. To be eligible for this award, freshmen must be a student member of SCSPA and accepted to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship.
SCSPA Yearbook Scholarship
SCSPA will offer one $500 scholarship, sponsored by Jostens Yearbook Company, to a graduating high school senior who shows scholarship in yearbook journalism and who plan to attend the University of South Carolina’s main campus in Columbia. Recipients are announced at SCSPA's spring conference. Applicants must be student members of SCSPA.
