ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS
What: SCSPA offers advisers and students one-day workshops for six-hours of instruction the following areas: Writing and Reporting: Please Tell Me a Story, Spend a Day with Publication Design, Final Cut Pro: the program and its perks, InDesign and Photoshop
When: Saturday, Sept. 27
Time: 9-4 p.m.
Where: University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Coliseum
Registration deadline: Sept. 12
Cost:
- $50 per individual
- $125 for three participants

Workshop Descriptions
Workshop #1 – Writing and Reporting: Please Tell Me a Story
Instructor: Dean Hume, Lakota East HS, Ohio
This indepth workshop will focus on basic reporting techniques and skills. With lots of examples and hands-on experience, participants will work on ways to engage readers with storytelling quotes and stories about real people doing real things. Forget telling the story about Homecoming. Tell me the story about the Homecoming court candidate who fell down the stairs during her entrance into the dance.
This type of writing and reporting requires thorough and well-planned interviewing that does more than just "ask questions." This type of writing uses tips and tricks from the masters. Writers write to be read.
This workshop will cultivate ideas and ways to make sure your audience actually takes the time to read your publication.
Among the topics the instructor will cover: (1) Interviewing preparations, (2) Question generation, (3) Multi-sourcing, (4) Story angle, (5) Gather deatils, (6) Writing for your readers.
Workshop #2 – Spend a Day with Publication Design
Instructor: Carrie Faust, Smoky Hill HS, Colorado
Even though you have begun the year with some idea of what you want in design, our instructor from Colorado will help your staff evaluate what you have and what you still need to do to make the total look the best it can be in 2008-2009. Because design features of newspapers and yearbooks are so similar today, staffs can learn from each other during this workshop.
Workshop #3 – Final Cut Pro: the program and its perks
Instructor: Amy Medlock-Greene, Dutch Fork HS, South Carolina
This six-hour class in Final Cut Pro will help teachers of video journalism/broadcast and those who want to put videos on their newspaper Web sit to gain a working knowledge of the program and its perks. This program can also be used to edit movies, so teachers of film classes can also benefit.
