Junior Mandy Martino had never been to Lake Worth Beach; she had always been a Palm Beach kind of gal. “I’m paying for the gas!” her friend protested and with that, Mandy was on her way to Lake Worth Beach for the first time ever.
Mandy jumped head first into the choppy waves, a decision she would soon regret. “I didn’t know that Lake Worth was so rocky so, my leg hit this huge rock in the water and my leg started to gush blood,” Mandy said.
Then it hit her. She had to pee, really, really badly. With no bathroom in sight, she decided if it was good enough for the fish it was good enough for her. “My need to pee just took over me and I totally forgot about my leg. Then this huge man a war wrapped around my leg, and I started screaming and trying to shake it off,” Mandy recounted. Even through her excruciating pain, she knew what her humiliating fate would be. Her three friends held her down while they peed on her to numb the pain. Yes, the chemicals of the urine did numb the pain of such stings. “It was out of love and I knew they had to do it,” Mandy said.
The pain subsided for a while, but it continued for two weeks after the incident. She had huge bumps all down her leg and a massive scar all down her leg from the rock. “I had to take FCAT that week and the man a war bumps were so itchy” Mandy said, “that’s actually probably why I failed it!” Let’s just say, Mandy wasn’t exactly enthralled with Lake Worth beach. “I will never go back there. They should have signs if there are rocks!’ Mandy said. And man-o-wars, there should really be signs for those man-o-wars, too.
