SIPA CONVENTION & COMPETITION
March 5-7, 2010 • Columbia, S.C.
Marriott Hotel and USC School of Journalism
and Mass Communications

Imagine a trip with no electricity or running water but filled instead with prison breaks, mosquitoes, infant mortality and mangos.

Sound exciting? Probably not for most people, but for a University of South Carolina junior, Paul Bowers, it was. The trip was his chance to make a difference.

“I think that storytelling can motivate people,” Bowers said. “One thing about journalism is we are a really limited agency. We aren’t the people who can fix things, but we can report on them and hopefully people with a useful job, like a doctor or economist, can go out and fix things.”

Bowers began his career in journalism working on his high school newspaper, The Wavebreaker (Summerville HS, S.C.). He eventually became editor-in-chief. Also during high school he wrote for his local daily newspaper, The Post and Courier, in the “by teens for teens” section. In addition, he wrote freelance music reviews and entertainment articles for a local alternative newspaper.

Bowers is currently a print journalism major at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at USC.

The trip that made a difference in Bowers life became possible when he won the “Win-A-Trip” contest held by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. The contest was designed to allow Kristof to take a college journalist with him to Africa for two weeks.

During Bowers’ two-week stay in Africa, they went from village to village visiting clinics and maternity wards. In his free time, Bowers kept a blog.

Bowers will be the 11 a.m. speaker Saturday at the 2010 SIPA convention.
