Description

Every USC graduate teaching assistant has the power to be an excellent teacher. Join Kate Scott, winner of the 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award for Graduate Assistants and graduate assistant instructor of Mathematics, for continental breakfast and an insightful discussion of how to excel in the classroom as a graduate teaching assistant. Setting expectations from the first day forward, sparking and guiding meaningful classroom discussions, and engaging in interactive teaching strategies are just a few of the topics Kate will discuss that are relevant to teaching assistants in all disciplines.

About the Presenter

Kate Scott is pursuing her doctorate in mathematics and was awarded the 2007 - 2008 USC Educational Foundation "Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award." This award, one of only two such awards given annually, is based on outstanding performance in teaching. Kate has taught over 300 students in seven different math courses offered at the University of South Carolina. In addition, she has served as a teaching assistant for a computer-based calculus laboratory and as a teaching assistant for math education courses for future elementary teachers. Her passion is helping students think critically about math and encouraging them to realize that the strange looking equations they find in their textbook relate to their normal experiences in daily life.
