Testing of siren/loudspeaker system May 14-15

The University of South Carolina will conduct testing of its new Emergency Notification System's sirens and loudspeakers Wednesday and Thursday, May 14-15, 2008.

This audible alert system consists of five speakers mounted on poles or building roofs around campus. These speakers can produce both tone or voice output for recorded messages.

More details will be available later this month on this Emergency Preparedness Web site, including digital audio files so that the South Carolina community and its nearby neighbors can listen and familiarize themselves with the different tones. Additional information will explain the appropriate action to take or shelter location to seek for specific emergency situations.

The schedule for the week is as follows:

  • Wednesday: Start testing of sirens from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Some tests will be of individual sirens; others will have sirens grouped together.
  • Thursday: System-wide test at 10:30 a.m. University personnel will be stationed at various locations to assess sound quality and otherwise judge the system's effectiveness. Other testing may occur throughout the day until 5 p.m.

After this round of testing, the university tentatively plans to perform monthly tests at noon on the first Monday of each month.

Emergency Notification: Carolina ALERT
(Automated Local Emergency Response
Technology)

Since being in place on Aug. 10, 2007, more than 32,000 students, faculty and staff on the Columbia campus have signed up to receive emergency notifications. The system is called Carolina ALERT: Automated Local Emergency Response Technology. Under the new system, text and voice messages will be sent to the cell phone numbers provided by students, faculty, and staff through VIP, as well as to e-mail addresses, and land-line numbers. The system was installed as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety measures on campus and to notify the campus immediately.

Please note that this is one tool among many that the University will use to notify the campus of an emergency situation. This system will be used in conjunction with existing means of communication. For questions or to get more information, call the University Technology Services Help Desk at 803-777-1800.
