Description: Featured presentation, 2013 USC Women’s and Gender Studies Conference “Transitions and Transformations: Gender at the Crossroads” Lumpkin Auditorium, Daniel Management Center, 8th Floor, Moore School of Business Female / Male? East / West? Androgyny as Literary Motif in Contemporary German Fiction Androgyny has a long tradition in German literature and art. There is, for example, a large interest for aspects of androgyny, especially intersexuality, in Contemporary German Fiction. German authors use this motif for a diagnostic view on society and cultural codifications of gender. Intersex-characters in literary texts are always outcasts - they suffer from social and sexual exclusion. On the other side they often have a special point of view that provides them with a certain awareness for social problems. Some texts also use the motif of hermaphroditism for political reflections (e.g. on the division and reunion of Germany or Europe) or aesthetic topics: intersexuality then is a symbol for art in general.
