The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan allows graduate and professional students to borrow a low interest, federally insured loan to cover costs not already covered by a student's aid package up to the student's cost of attendance. Eligibility is determined by the credit-worthiness of the applicant as determined by the participating banks or other lending institutions to which the borrower applies.
- For loans disbursed after July 1, 2008 Graduate PLUS loans have a fixed interest rate of 8.5%.
- Repayment is deferred until six months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time
Students are required to complete the FAFSA and apply for a Federal Stafford Loan along with the Graduate PLUS application with your lender before our office can certify a Graduate PLUS Loan.
The University of South Carolina strongly encourages students to accept the Federal Stafford Loan before applying for a PLUS Loan due to more favorable interest and repayment options.
