Private education loans are made through private
lending institutions and are not part of federal loan
programs. We encourage you to first look into federal loan
programs before applying for a private loan. If you are
ineligible for federal government loans or have already
exhausted government sources, private loans can help offset
the difference between educational expenses and federal
loans. There are many private loan options and it is to your
benefit to research and find the loan that best meets your
specific needs. Please remember that final approval for your
loan resides with your lender and not the University of
South Carolina - Columbia.
Why should I take out a private loan?
Your expenses are greater than your current financial aid
awards.
You don't qualify for traditional loans and/or grants.
How do I apply for a private loan?
Choose a lender from the list below and follow instructions
on-line or provide us with the application from your lender
of choice.
How do I receive my loan money?
Your lender will send your loan funds to the Student Loan
Accounting and Check Disbursement Office, which is located
in Room 207, Petigru. All available funds must first be
used to pay any university charges. Any remaining funds
will be issued as an overage, which will be mailed or
directly deposited according to your choice.
If you have received a private loan before, we recommend that you continue to borrow through that lender.
