The U.S. Department of Education has recently added a new eligibility
requirement for SMART Grants. Beginning with the spring 2008 semester,
and for all future semesters, students must enroll in at least one course
required in their SMART-eligible major in order to receive a SMART Grant.
This does not include general education requirements or electives outside
the major.
In order to comply with this requirement, the Office of Student Financial
Aid and Scholarships will review each student’s schedule of classes for at
least one course required in the specific major as published in the
Undergraduate Academic Bulletin.
For example, for Mechanical Engineering majors we will look for a course
prefix of EMCH and a corresponding course number as published in the
Bulletin; for Chemistry majors we will look for a course prefix of CHEM and
a corresponding course number as published in the Bulletin, and so forth for
each major. If we are unable to determine whether or not a student is
enrolled in at least one course required in their SMART-eligible major, we
will contact the appropriate academic department for confirmation.
This review will take place at the end of the drop-add period each
semester. Students who are not enrolled in at least one course
appropriate to their SMART-eligible major will not receive the grant.
