Start with the FAFSA

FAFSA:
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA is the application necessary to apply for federal financial aid at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. You must complete a new FAFSA every year.

For the fall 2008, spring 2009, and summer 2009 terms, you need to complete the FAFSA for 2008-09.

Use the Web:
You should complete and submit your FAFSA on the Web. The web version of the FAFSA can eliminate careless errors and save mailing and processing time.

The Five-Minute FAFSA Video (Google Video)

This five minute video created by FastWeb is a quick and entertaining introduction to completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Submit a FAFSA to apply for grants, loans and work-study from the federal government as well as state and school-based financial aid.

Have a FAFSA PIN:
If you have a FAFSA PIN, you should use the same PIN to complete the 2008-2009 FAFSA on the Web. Your parents may also request a PIN through the same site.

Do Not Have a PIN:
If you, or your parents (if dependent) do not have a PIN, you should request one at www.pin.ed.gov.  When  you request a FAFSA PIN, you will receive a real-time response.  You can then use your PIN to complete your FAFSA.  This applies to your parents as well.

Web Worksheet:
There is a FAFSA on the Web worksheetthat you may want to complete that will help you in entering your information into the FAFSA on the Web. It may also be found under "Before Beginning a FAFSA" of the FAFSA on the Web and at the following web site: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before012.htm.

Paper FAFSA:
If you must complete a paper FAFSA, you can download a PDF version of the FAFSA at http://fsa.ed.gov/docs/en-colorPDF_FAFSA_20071818.pdf.  The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships no longer maintains a supply of paper FAFSAs.

How We Will Communicate With You
Once our office receives the results of your FAFSA application, we will begin to communicate with you.  We may need to clarify the information you provided, or correct something that is wrong.  Our first means of communication will be an email message to you informing you of what we need.  We will first try to use your University email address.  If you do not have a University email address, we will then use the e-mail address you provided on the FAFSA form.  If we find that address invalid, we will mail printed information to your regular postal mailing address.

If you submit documents to our office and we need to return those documents for signatures, missing information, or we need to clarify some other information you provided, we will use regular U. S. Postal Service snail mail to exchange documents.

Should you encounter problems with the FAFSA on the Web, you may call the customer service number at 800/4-FED-AID (800/433-3243) / TTY: 800/730-8913.
