Everette H. Newman
Mr. Newman completes his term as president of the Development
Foundation Board of Directors in June 2004 and begins his term as
Chair Emeritus. He continues to serve as a member of the Executive
Committee and the Real Estate Committee. He joined the Board in 1993.
A practicing attorney in Anderson, Mr. Newman’s knowledge and
expertise have strengthened the Board. He was for many years a partner
with the law firm of Jones, Newman, Kunes, Holman, and Cox. While
there, he specialized in estate planning, taxation, and real estate.
His professional experience also includes serving as senior vice
president and trust officer for the First National Bank of South
Carolina. He founded the bank’s Trust Department in Anderson.
Mr. Newman is a member of both the American Bar Association and the
South Carolina Bar Association. He is founding president of the
Anderson Estate Planning Council. He serves on the Board of Directors
for the Anderson Area Medical Center and the Executive Committee for
the USC Law School Partnership Board. Mr. Newman came to USC as a
scholar athlete and graduate in 1961 with a major in political science
and from the USC Law School in 1965. He is a long-time supporter of
USC and an avid Gamecock fan. [

Paul S. Goldsmith
A Development Foundation board member since 1992, Mr. Goldsmith served
as the Foundation’s chair for eight years. He also is a member of the
Real Estate Committee.
A licensed realtor, Mr. Goldsmith is president of Wm. Goldsmith Co.,
an insurance and real estate service company located in Greenville. He
has been honored with numerous awards during his career, including the
Greenville Chapter Professional Secretaries International Executive of
the Year Award, and the USC Moore School of Business Distinguished
Alumnus Award in 1987. He has been named South Carolina Realtor of the
Year and, twice, Greenville Realtor of the Year.
Mr. Goldsmith is the former president of both the Greenville Board of
Realtors and the South Carolina Board of Realtors. He serves on the
Board of Directors for BB&T Corporation and Capital Insights; is
chairman of the Endowment Corporation board for the YMCA; and is on
the Board of Trustees for the
Greenville Urban League. As a valued member of the USC Board of
Trustees, Mr. Goldsmith holds the distinguished title of Trustee
Emeritus for his 17 years of dedicated service.[

Stephen
K. Benjamin
Stephen K. Benjamin is the principal of The Benjamin Law Firm, LLC a
business law firm, located in Columbia, South Carolina offering a
diverse spectrum of legal services to its clients.
Mr. Benjamin's practice emphasizes governmental strategic planning,
administrative and regulatory work, municipal finance, civil
litigation and general business matters. He is admitted to
practice before all state courts in South Carolina, the U.S. District
Court, Federal District of South Carolina and the United States Court
of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Jerome D. Odom
Jerry Odom served as the Administrative Liaison to the Educational
Foundation from 1997 to 2004 and participated in all committee and
board meetings. In 2004, he returned to serving as a professor in the
Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. The Board elected him to a new
term as a faculty member.
Jerry Odom received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the
University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and his Ph.D. in inorganic
chemistry from Indiana University. After a postdoctoral year at
Bristol University in Bristol, England, he joined the faculty of the
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, as an assistant professor at
the University of South Carolina. After many years as professor and
chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dr. Odom was
appointed dean of the College of Science and Mathematics. In March
1997, Dr. Odom was appointed executive vice president for academic
affairs and provost.
He is the author of 150 peer-reviewed papers, five general chemistry
textbooks, and holds two patents. Dr. Odom is the recipient of
numerous awards and honors from the University, including the Amoco
Teaching Award (1984), the Mungo Teaching Award (1993); and the
Russell Research Award in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering
(1994). The five USC Foundations paid tribute to Dr. Jerome D. Odom
for his outstanding service to the foundations by establishing the
Jerome D. Odom Fellowship in Chemistry.

James W. Cantey, Jr.
Mr. Cantey joined the Development Foundation in 1998 and is a member
and former chair of the Real Estate Committee. He was elected to serve
as Secretary/Treasurer in 2004.
Mr. Cantey is president of COA/Radius, Inc., a government service
contractor firm and real estate development company in Columbia.
Involved in many professional and civic organizations, Mr. Cantey is a
member of the Board of Trustees for the South Carolina State Museum
Foundation and a member of the Board of Directors for the Executive
Association of Greater Columbia. He is highly involved with Junior
Achievement of Central South Carolina, Inc. having served as its
chairman and currently serving on its Board of Directors and Executive
Committee. He is a former chairman and director of the Economic
Development Commission of Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, and Newberry
counties. He is also the co-founder and past president and director of
the Metropolitan Business Club.

James M. Daniel III
James Daniel joined the Development Foundation in 1999 and is a member
of the Real Estate Committee. He serves as broker in charge of Daniel
Real Estate, LLC.
Mr. Daniel received a B.A. in History from the Citadel in 1965 and his
Juris Doctor from the USC School of Law in 1968. He served as a legal
consultant for SMI-Owen Steel. He served as chair of the Columbia
Development Corporation. He is a member of the Richland County and
South Carolina Bar Associations, past president of Columbia Young
Lawyers, past member of the Board of Directors of the Cultural Council
of Richland and Lexington Counties, Great Columbia Chamber of
Commerce, the Columbia Action Council, Children’s Hospital, and the
South Carolina State Museum. He is also very active as a youth
basketball coach.

William W. Doar Jr.
Mr. Doar joined the Development Foundation in 2000 and serves on the
Real Estate Committee. Effective July 2004, he will serve as Chair of
the Real Estate Committee.
Mr. Doar is an attorney in the Georgetown offices of the McNair Law
Firm. He also has served the State of South Carolina as a
representative in the state House of Representatives, and as a state
Senator for Georgetown County.
Mr. Doar earned both a B.S. and juris doctor from USC and is a past
president of the USC Alumni Association. He also is the past president
of the Georgetown County Bar Association, a member of the South
Carolina American Bar Association, and a member of the South Carolina
Defense Attorneys Association. He is also a member of the Georgetown
Rotary Club, a member of the Winyah Indigo Society, and a participant
in local philanthropic activities.

Dr. Madilyn M. Fletcher
Dr. Fletcher has been a member of the Foundation since 1997, serves on
the
Real Estate Committee, and chairs the USC Environmental Task Force for
the Foundation.
A nationally known scientist, Dr. Fletcher is a tenured, full
professor and the director of The Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine
and Coastal Sciences at USC. She is the University’s representative on
the Commission on Food, Environment, and Renewal Resources of the
National Association for State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC).
She is president of the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories,
and a Fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology. She is also a
member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Estuarine Research
Federation, the Society for General Microbiology, and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science.
Recognized for her contributions to the field of marine study, Dr.
Fletcher has received several awards, including the Orton K. Start
Distinguished Lecturer Award from Miami University and a Certificate
of Appreciation for sustained outstanding research contributions from
the Office of Energy Research, U.S.
Department of Energy.

William C. Hammett Jr. (W.C.)
Mr. Hammett has served on the Development Foundation since 1999 and is
a member and the 2004 chair of the Audit and Budget Committee.
He is chief financial officer for Dave & Buster’s, Inc., an operator
of more than thirty international entertainment complexes
headquartered in Dallas, Texas.
Before joining Dave & Buster’s, Mr. Hammett was chief financial
officer for La Quinta, Inc., where he was part of a senior management
team that completely restructured the company both financially and
operationally, resulting in a dramatic increase in market
capitalization.
A certified public accountant with a B.S. in accounting from USC, Mr.
Hammett is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and has received its Outstanding
Alumnus Award. He has served on the YMCA Board of Managers, the
Executive Committee of the USC Friends of the Accounting Department,
and the National Advisory Committee’s “Campaign 2000.”

S. (Stan) Harpe, II
Mr. Harpe joined the Development Foundation in 2004 and serves as a
member of the Real Estate Committee.
He has over 24 yers experience in the commercial real estate business.
He began his career with Edens and Avant, Inc. in 1980. In 1997, he
joined CB Richard Ellis/Columbia as a partner. He then formed H R
Developers, LLC and has expanded into the development, management, and
ownership of numerous commercial real estate ventures. He received his
bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina.
Mr. Harpe is a past member and chairman of the City of Columbia
Planning Commission and pat member of the University of South Carolina
Board of Visitors. He currently a member of the Greater Columbia
Association of Realtors, the South Carolina Association of Realtors,
the International Council of Shopping Centers, the ICSC State
Government Relations Committee, and the Greater Columbia Association
of Realtors, Circle of Excellence.

Robert R. Hill, Jr.
Mr. Hill serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of South
Carolina Bank and Trust. He joined the Development Foundation in 2004
and serves as a member of the Audit and Budget Committee.
Mr. Hill received a bachelor of science in business administration
from the Citadel in 1988 and a master of business administration from
the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in
1955. Mr. Hill began his banking career at Wachovia in Charlotte,
North Carolina. In 1991, he became commercial banking manager at Rock
Hill National Bank. In 1995, he founded the National Bank of York
County and served as president and CEO. In 1998 he was named chief
operating officer of South Carolina Bank and Trust and in 1999 he was
named president and chief operating officer.
Mr. Hill was named Outstanding Young Banker in 2000 and the Moore
School of Business presented him with the Distinguished Young Alumnus
Award in 2004. He is serving or has served on the boards of the
Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Columbia Museum of Art, South Carolina
Bankers Association Young Bankers Division, Central Carolina Community
Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of America, and the South Carolina
Museum Foundation. He is chair-elect for the South Carolina Banker’s

John C. Houser
Mr. Houser has served as a member of the Foundation since 1997. He
chairs the Investments Committee and serves on the Executive
Committee.
Mr. Houser is a retired senior vice president for First Gaston Bank in
Gastonia, North Carolina. His numerous community and professional
activities include having served as fundraising chairman for the
Gaston County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Chamber of
Commerce's Chamber 2000 Advisory Council. Mr. Houser served as
chairman of the Finance Committee for the Gaston County Educational
Foundation; membership chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board;
and member of the board for Gaston County Social Services. He served
as chairman for the Gastonia ABC Board and the Gaston County United
Arts and Science Council. He was also president, chairman, and
campaign chairman for the United Way of Gaston County.
Mr. Houser is an active supporter of USC. He previously served as a
member and chairman of the Board of Visitors; member of the Board of
Trustees; member of the Alumni Council; and president of the Alumni

S. Alan Medlin
Mr. Medlin is a professor at the USC School of Law. Before joining the
faculty, he was a partner with Whitener, Knight, and Medlin law firm.
A foundation member since 1992, he serves on the Real Estate
Committee.
Mr. Medlin is a member of the American Bar Association and a certified
specialist in estate planning and probate with the South Carolina Bar.
He is a "Wills and Trusts" instructor for the South Carolina Bar
Review, and an Academic Fellow with the American College of Trust and
Estate Counsel. He also serves as co-editor for the Probate Practice
Reporter and co-editor for the Estate Planning, Probate and Trust
News.
Mr. Medlin has received the COM pleat Lawyer Award and the USC School
of Law Faculty Service Award, and he has received the USC School of
Law Outstanding Teacher Award an astounding five times.

Thomas E. Suggs
Mr. Suggs joined the Development Foundation Board in 1997. He has
served as secretary/treasurer of the Foundation, chairman of the Real
Estate Committee, and a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Suggs
assumes the role of Chair of the Board in July 2004.
Mr. Suggs is president and chief executive officer of Rooney McArthur
& Suggs, Inc., an insurance brokerage and consulting firm in Columbia.
A 1971 graduate of USC, Mr. Suggs is a former quarterback for The
Gamecocks. He has been inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame and
the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. The Alumni
Association selected him as New Carolinian of the Year in 1980; the
Moore School of Business named him
a distinguished alumnus in 1999. Mr. Suggs is also a member of the
Business Partnership Foundation. He is a former chairman of the Alumni
Annual Fund, of the USC Board of Visitors, and of University
Associates.
In addition to his service to the University, Mr. Suggs’ community
activities have been numerous. Those efforts include serving as
chairman of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and contributing
as a member of the Business Advisory Committee to the Council of
College Presidents and the Council of Education of the Midlands. He is
also a member of the Midlands Business Leadership Group and serves on

G. Cameron Todd
Mr. Todd joined the Development Foundation in 1996. He is a member of
the Investments Committee.
Now retired, Mr. Todd joined Merrill Lynch as an account executive and
became a senior vice president.
A very active supporter of USC, Mr. Todd is a former president and
president emeritus of the USC Educational Foundation. He is also
former president of the Chair Endowment Club. He has served as a
member and chairman of the President's Council and as chairman of the
Fellows of the Foundation. He is also the founder and a past president
of University Associates. Mr. Todd established the Todd Medical
Education Endowment Fund at the USC School of Medicine and the J.
Henry Fellers Chair in Economics in the Moore School of Business. In
1985, he was named a distinguished alumnus of the Moore School of
Business.
Mr. Todd’s numerous community activities include being a former member
of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Better
Business Bureau of Greater Columbia. He is also a former member of the
Board of Directors for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and he
has served as vice president and
president of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He is also
founder, former board member, and president of the Central Carolina

Susie H. VanHuss
Dr. VanHuss was named executive director of University Foundations in
1997.
Dr. VanHuss is a distinguished professor emerita of management in the
Moore School of Business at USC. She served as chair of management in
the Moore School of Business for a number of years and also served as
interim dean from July 1993 until September 1994. A prolific author,
Dr. VanHuss received a Gold Book award commemorating the sale of a
million copies of one of her textbooks. Her work includes textbooks in
communications, keyboarding, and office technology published by
Thomson/South-Western.
In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the five USC
Foundations, Dr. VanHuss also serves on external boards of directors
and advisory councils, including the Board of Governors of the South
Carolina Patients’ Compensation Fund, immediate past chair of the
Carolina Children’s Home board, the Central Carolina Community
Foundation, Columbia Advisory Board of Carolina First, and chair of
the Junior Achievement board. She has also served on several corporate
boards.
Dr. VanHuss was the University of South Carolina Faculty
Representative to the National Collegiate Athletics Association for
nine years. She has done extensive consulting and training for
industry and education groups in 48 states, six provinces of Canada,
Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic,
