Food Independence

The Community Food Systems team promotes research and action for a more sustainable and/or local food system. This team coordinates events to educate and promote awareness of sustainable dining practices with Sodexo (campus dining provider) and other campus organizations, as well as local and sustainable food purchasing. The Community Food Systems team also works with off-campus organizations to promote local eating with other communities.

Food Justice Week: Farmworker advocate speaks to full classroom

Exploring Farmworker Justice with  Esteban Echeverria

Esteban Echevierra, Students Action with Farmworkers (SAF) chair and practicing lawyer in Charlotte, NC, came to USC campus in honor of National Farmworkers Awarness Week to present on farmworker conditions in the US today.  As a former farmworker himself, Mr. Echevierra shared some of his firsthand experiences of growing up in the fields.  His presentation included past and current working conditions and future conditions considering trends, with emphasis on health and safety for workers.  Mr. Echevierria also discussed his work as a lawyer, the types of cases he deals with regularly and the difficulties, due to discrimination and denial of rights, faced by many Hispanic farmworkers.  Finally, Mr. Echevierra highlighted the significant social contribution of farmworkers, something that is taken for granted by all of us every day. To learn more about SAF, visit their website at  This event is part of Sustainable Carolina's Food Justice Week as well as the National Farmworkers Awareness Week, and is brought to campus from a collaboration between Sustainable Carolina and Students Allied for Better Immigration Opportunities (SABIO).
