Burglary and Possible Security Breach at Moore School - May 2008
Monday evening, May 26th, 2008 computer hardware containing data files was
stolen from the Dean’s Office. The University’s Division of Law
Enforcement and Safety has been notified as have security personnel from the
Office of Information Technology. An investigation is being conducted.
As a result of this incident it is possible that personally identifiable data
have been compromised, including social security numbers, salaries, and information
concerning terms of appointment. Although the University has no evidence that
an unauthorized individual is using your personal information, there are steps
that you can take to protect yourself.
- Individuals whose personal information was involved – faculty and
unclassified staff - can request a free initial fraud alert to be placed on
their credit files by calling any one of the three major national credit bureaus
listed on the attached sheet. When you place a fraud alert with one of the
national credit bureaus, that agency will notify the other two agencies. Fraud
alerts will then be placed automatically on your accounts at all three agencies,
and all three agencies will separately mail credit reports to you at no cost.
- Guidance on identity protection, identity theft, and precautionary measures
is available at:
- The University’s website: http://www.sc.edu/identity/index.shtml.
and/or
