ABOUT KATRINA CRISIS AND
ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH
CAROLINA
The Katrina CRISIS (Coastal Resiliency Information
Systems Initiative for the Southeast) highlighted in
this book originated in the University of South
Carolina's Environmental Research Initiative Committee
(ERIC), appointed by Harris Pastides, vice president for
Research and Health Sciences.
ERIC members come from a broad range of environmental
programs at the university, but they have a common
objective: to advise Pastides on environmental research
at the university and to assist in the review of
research proposals and requests.
After assessing university resources and research fund
availability, the committee has defined three general
target areas for the university’s environmental research
program: water and coasts, environment and health, and
environmental risk and vulnerability. ERIC is also
establishing a working relationship with NanoCenter and
Future FuelsTM researchers to explore the implications
of nanomaterials and alternatives to fossil fuels on
environmental quality.
