Ethelind Pope Brown Natural History Endowment

Following her death on October 1, 1997, Ethelind Pope Brown (Mrs. William Carroll Brown, Jr.) was memorialized by the Pope Brown Foundation with the establishment of an endowment in her name. The Ethelind Pope Brown Natural History Endowment for the University Libraries perpetuates her interest in natural history and her loyalty to her alma mater ('26).

In 1991, Mrs. Brown gave to Thomas Cooper Library a unique collection of eighteenth-century natural history watercolors illustrating South Carolina birds and flowers. The portfolio, which features 32 original works, is perhaps the most significant document of its kind donated to a public institution in this century. Furthermore, it is believed to be the largest existing group of natural history watercolors on South Carolina in the nation. View these beautiful watercolors in our Digital Library.

Building on this foundation generously given by Mrs. Brown, the Ethelind Pope Brown Natural History Endowment will provide funds each year for the preservation of publications pertaining to natural history and related subjects for the University Libraries.
