Dr. C. Warren Irvin, Jr., scholar and scientist, has made a welcome and lasting gift to the University. Having compiled an extensive personal library of publications relating to Charles Darwin and to the development and understanding of modern scientific thought, Dr. Irvin, a retired cardiologist of Columbia, generously donated his collection to the Thomas Cooper Library. These volumes are housed in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, where they are made available to interested scholars. The Department has also produced a hypertext exhibit on Darwin and
Darwiniana. The C. Warren Irvin.,
Jr. Collection of Darwin and Darwin-Related Books is a unique gift to current and future scientists, historians, and bibliographers.

A tandem gift, the C. Warren Irvin, Jr. & Josephine B. Irvin Endowment Fund, given with his wife, Josephine Brown Irvin (class of 1943), was established to support and preserve the Darwin collection in the years ahead. Income from the endowment will be used to augment the collections, maintain the books and manuscripts, and, in the future, may be sufficient to support a graduate fellowship, enabling students to perform extensive research in the collection.
The Irvin family has extensive involvement with the University, including two sons who are alumni: Charles Warren Irvin, III ('70), and Wilmot Brown Irvin ('72 & '77). The Irvin family gifts have brought the study of Darwiniana and evolution to another level.
