NEH Grant Endowment

The University of South Carolina Libraries were awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant to strengthen and preserve its humanities collections. The period of the grant was from 1994 to 1998.

Funds generated from the endowment will provide financial stability for acquiring materials that support present and future humanities course work at the University of South Carolina. The scope of the humanities collection will be expanded to include information from a variety of formats, which will better support course design, teaching, learning, and research data collection. Interdisciplinary, research-level, and Honors College materials are specifically targeted.

The University Libraries will also support preservation of their humanities materials with funds from the endowment, notably older, fragile, and increasingly valuable materials that are critical resources for students and scholars.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the University Libraries community, the NEH Challenge Grant's goal was reached before its July 1998 deadline. As a result, the Libraries received a total of $425,000 in matching funds. Donations to the NEH Grant Endowment are still being accepted.
