Theodore Leschetizky and Edwin Hughes, 1909
Edwin Hughes (1884-1965) was a notable American pupil of and later assistant (1909-1910) to the great Viennese-based piano teacher Theodore Leschetizky; he came to Leschetizky after studying with Rafael Joseffy in New York. Following a two-year teaching stint in Detroit, Hughes established a concert career in Europe (principally Vienna and Germany, where his home was Munich) from 1912-1916, remaining in Munich until conditions in World War I made that impractical (his article from the early war years are interesting essays in the musical and cultural life of Germany at the beginning of the war, when Americans initially remained welcome). On returning home Hughes established a successful teaching and concert career, first alone, then in a two-piano format with his wife, Jewel Bethany Hughes, and made numerous notable (and sometimes quite eccentric) editions of standard piano repertory for G. Schirmer while piano editor for that firm (1920-1925). And as one can see from the memorabilia, Hughes wrote extensively about problems of piano technique, and about his teacher Leschetizky.
