Leonard T. Baker

Biographical Note:
A native of Charleston, S.C., Baker earned an AB in 1888 and an AM
in 1893 from the College of Charleston. He taught in the high schools
in Charleston and Camden from 1889 to 1898 and was superintendent
of schools at Lancaster and Winnsboro from 1898 to 1906. He joined
the Carolina faculty in 1906 as professor of education and rose quickly
to the position of dean of the University in 1914. In 1932, he was
made president of the University and served in that position through
one of the most trying times in Carolina history. In 1936, he stepped
down to assume the job of vice president and dean of the faculty.
On three different occasions, 1926–1927, 1931–1932, and
1944–1945, he served as acting president. In 1946, he became
the first president emeritus of the University.
