Office of the President
Leonard T. Baker
1931-1936

Biographical Note:

A native of Charleston, S.C., Baker earned an AB in 1888 and an AM in 1893 from the College of Charleston. He taught in the high schools in Charleston and Camden from 1889 to 1898 and was superintendent of schools at Lancaster and Winnsboro from 1898 to 1906. He joined the Carolina faculty in 1906 as professor of education and rose quickly to the position of dean of the University in 1914. In 1932, he was made president of the University and served in that position through one of the most trying times in Carolina history. In 1936, he stepped down to assume the job of vice president and dean of the faculty. On three different occasions, 1926–1927, 1931–1932, and 1944–1945, he served as acting president. In 1946, he became the first president emeritus of the University.
