| Manuscript, 29 July 1846, address of John Caldwell Calhoun (1782-1850) before the U.S. Senate in debate over the Oregon question with Senators William Allen of Ohio and Lewis Cass of Michigan. The text of Calhoun's remarks was printed in The Papers of John C. Calhoun, the National Intelligencer, The Congressional Record, and a number of newspapers. This manuscript is in two hands, neither of which is Calhoun's; neither are the emendations in his hand, and there are other variants from the version printed in The Papers of John C. Calhoun. |
