Locations Browsing
Browsing Decisions
(9/10/04)
-
Browsing materials are ordered from the budgeted
Acquisitions monies, chosen from the Approval books or selected from the
backlog of materials that arrives in the Catalog Dept. These materials are
selected to represent the reading interests of our patrons, trying to cover as
many subject areas as possible. It is wise to choose materials that are more
entertaining or informative without being technical in nature.
-
Please note that
materials chosen for Browsing will remain on those shelves for approximately
six months before removal to the regular stack locations.
- Action Dates have
been entered for each title upon cataloging of the material, so that a cuing
date will occur when that title is ready to be reviewed (six months from the
date of cataloging). On-Demand reports can be printed at any time for this
review process.
- Titles should be
reprocessed for the stacks after six months on the shelves, no matter how many
“check-outs” have been recorded.
- This periodic evaluation
should help to keep the collection fresh and interesting. We find that patrons
tend to make Browsing their first stop when entering the library because they
want to get a book they have seen before or see what’s new on the shelves.
Keeps everyone excited.
- Exceptions can be made
for returning some materials to the Browsing Collection because of immediacy
of the subject (e.g. 9/11 or terrorist materials). Please revise the Action
Date when returning special books to the Browsing shelves.
- For titles being
transferred to the regular collections, retrieve the books from
Browsing and follow the directions for reprocessing (listed
separately).
- Materials absent from the Browsing shelves on the cuing date need to be marked
for Cat
Review on the Item Record, have the Action Date
revised to the Return Due Date and a note placed to send to “yourself” for
transfer, at the bottom of the Item Record. ***Music has requested that none of their titles
appear in the Browsing Collection, so there will be no “M”
classification books in that collection.
Browsing Process
9/10/04
-
Call up book by the barcode.
-
Place jacket on book, if there
is one. While on the item record, add a second barcode which you will place on
the jacket (if no jacket-no second barcode).
-
Key in an Action Date (ex:
mo/dy/year) which is six months ahead of the cataloging date.
(ex: creation date = 01/15/2004 means action date = 07/15/2004
-
Go to the Holdings Screen
and change the sublocation to br (ex: cl,br).
-
Reformat the call number to
add the appropriate |c’s.
-
With book jacket on the book ,
place it on the marking truck.
-
It is not necessary to change
the 049 on the Bibliographic screen.
-
Make sure the general
markings are on the book (magnetic patch, possession stamp on the back of the t.p., and date due slip).
Browsing Procedure for Reprocessing
(Revised 9/10/04)
-
Call up the book on USCAN by its
barcode.
- Cut off the jacket from the book (if
tape is under the poly cover), or just take off the red tape on the outside of
the cover.
- IF cutting off jacket: Delete the
Action Date (enter after this action) and old barcode from the item record and
scan in a new one placed on the book proper. *OR Delete Action date only if
keeping jacket.
- Toggle to the Bibliographic screen and
change the 049 (location) if necessary (especially for Science, Math, Business,
etc.)
- Toggle to the Holdings screen.
- Change the location code to reflect
the new location. Definitely remove the “br” designation.
- Check the call number to see that it
is accurate between book and screen.
- In the note field type: tr/br date
(transfer to browsing and the date [mo/yr])
- Take books to Circulation and place on
the proper trucks or shelves to return to the stacks or other branch locations
OR place on the Circ Truck in Processing Services.
Special
Cases:
- If the call number needs to
be changed, mark through the old number on the spine, change the number inside
the book to be accurate, and send to processing.
- If the book needs some
repair, send to binding with a “repair” strip in it.
- Remember, some branches
require a location above the call number, so the old label will have to be
retyped in that case.
