Campus to be wireless by 2010

No doubt you’ve seen faculty, staff, and students enjoying the beautiful outdoors—and the wireless network—on the historic Horseshoe.

By the end of this academic year, the entire campus will be covered by wireless service, giving faculty, staff, and students the ability to work and study in more locations than ever before.

“We’re working with AT&T to equip 160 buildings and outdoor areas with high-speed wireless broadband to connect 30,000 students, faculty, staff, and guests,” said Kyle Herron, director of communications infrastructure. “Two notable benefits of this service are increased network access speed and coverage.”

The WiFi service will include all AT&T Basic HotSpots throughout South Carolina. That’s more than 200 hot spot locations—including McDonald’s and Starbucks with AT&T wireless service—that faculty, staff, and students will be able to access at no additional charge.

For complete instructions on how to configure your wireless device, contact the University Technology Services Help Desk at 7-1800 or go to the Wireless @ USC site at uts.sc.edu/wireless.
