HRSM students get into the swing at the Masters

It is undeniably one of the most recognizable and prestigious international sporting events--the Masters at Augusta National, or as it’s simply called, The Masters.
The preeminent golf tournament kicks off April 7 and nearly 500 students from the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management will be there to work and learn at this global event.
Ava Jones, a junior sport and entertainment management major from Johnson City, TN., says the opportunity will be a major career boost to her resume’.
“The position I have is a sales assistant, specifically for the Bobby Jones apparel line. I held this same position last year and it requires informing customers about our products and helping them decide on what to purchase. While the position I hold is very basic, the prestige of working at the Masters is something that very few job applicants have,” Jones says.
The school has established a reputation for sending highly qualified and hardworking students to the golf tournament ever since it joined forces with the Masters eight years ago.
Mark Lockridge, a 2003 alumnus of the college, is now the Augusta National clubhouse manager. He tells the students that the Masters experience will be the most demanding, rewarding, frustrating, satisfying, difficult and exciting time of their careers.
“Those who are working for the first time will soon come to understand. Those returning for another year can’t wait to get back. Not many times in your career will you be so excited to work over 100-plus hours in a week,” Lockridge says.
During the week of the tournament, HRSM students will work in a wide range of jobs—concessions, valet, beverage, housekeeping, front desk operations, chauffeurs and locker room attendants.
Cathy Gustafson, an associate professor in the college’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, established the partnership with the Tournament in 2005. Gustafson says you can’t overstate the value of working at the Masters.
“The Masters is an incredibly high volume event with the ultimate standards in club operations,” Gustafson says. “This is an opportunity for our students to participate and support an event with national and international prestige. If you can succeed here, you can succeed anywhere else in the hospitality industry.”
