History of the Amy V. Cockcroft
Nursing
Leadership Development Program
|
|
|
|
During the early 1990’s when healthcare was considered to
be in a chaotic state, a wise and learned nurse decided to
endow her colleagues with the opportunity to network and
grow together to develop skills and strengths with which
to lead professionals into the next century. This wise
nurse was Amy V. Cockcroft. |
|
She
turned this challenge over to the University of South
Carolina and the College of Nursing to develop such a program. A group of local
nurse leaders came together to envision this program.
Their brainstorming included identifying core skills
needed to face the tough times ahead, searching for
appropriate content and teachers, time frames, and
projects. The end result was a year long program that
consisted of five intensive sessions. These sessions would
include workshops, small group discussions, readings,
journaling, workshops, self assessments, a leadership
project and evaluations. |

|
The
inaugural class occurred in 1995 – 1996 with a group of
twelve fellows. Since the inception of the Amy V.
Cockcroft program there have been over 90 fellows to
complete the program. These fellows reside in various
parts of the United States. They are making an impact in
the health care field by holding key leadership positions
within the field and they are having an impact in such
areas as public policy. The program continues to grow and
have an impact on shaping the health care industry in the
21st century.
