“The respect, consideration and expectations of class
members to blossom and become noted for an idea presented
at the leadership conference made a significant impact
with me. We were housed at the Whitney and treated like
peoples of great importance. We could actually feel the
“grooming” and left with a feeling that we had
individually made a significant contribution to the
profession. Thank you faculty, colleagues, and thank you
Mrs. Cockcroft for such a grand opportunity.”
Maria
Cardenas, Class of 1995-1996
“The Amy
V. Cockcroft program came at a time when I needed to
define my career direction and helped me identify higher
goals for personal and professional development. My most
memorable time was the Personal Creativity workshop with
Dan Pesut.”
Joan
Wilk, Class of 1996-1997
“The
leadership skills and the information I learned and
understood about myself have enhanced my work as a leader
in first the School of Nursing and now for the College of
Health Sciences. Several of the members of my class have
kept in contact and that has been good. My most memorable
times were the frank and open discussions we had in the
meeting times.”
Dr.
Jan Corder, Class of 1996-1997
“Encouraged me to further develop my leadership skills by
continuing to learn about myself and ways I could further
develop my strengths and improve on my weak areas. My
most memorable times were the networking with nursing
colleagues in different areas of nursing practice and
leadership.”
Marilyn Coleman, Class of 1997-1998
“Simply
stated…participation in the Cockcroft program taught me
how to leave my comfort zone and take risk and challenges
in my professional and personal life. My most memorable
times were each time our group of Cockcroft fellows
gathered, we made memories.”
Nydia
Harter, Class of 1997-1998
“The
program gives an empowering sense of self with the
knowledge and abilities to emerge as a nursing leader. My
most memorable times were sharing times in the evening
with the fellows.”
Dr.
Angie Davis, Class of 2003-2004
“The Amy
V. Cockcroft program had major impact on my life. It
renewed my faith in my profession as a nurse. Meeting and
learning from such impressive nursing leaders, my fellow
classmates and leaders vested in nursing was an honor and
eye opening experience. The encouragement, education and
feedback from our instructors and speakers is something
you can’t put a price on nor can it be put in writing, it
is a feeling of wellness and belonging. I now want to be
involved in actions that promote nursing and am proud my
daughter is training to be a nurse. What’s memorable for
me was the process of getting to know not only myself, but
my classmates and the support of each other through
various events in our lives.”
Met
Taylor, Class of 2003-2004
“The Amy
V. Cockcroft program helped me to see the Big Picture and
the future and sharpened my facilitating and leadership
skill. I discovered opportunities to celebrate the
positive with the team and team dynamics. It gave me
strength in working through challenges and moving on. The
networking and the opportunity to co-author and publish an
article on our work in a nationally recognized nursing
journal was great professional development. Mary Frame and
Ruth Seigler with their strong leadership skills,
challenged and encouraged me, gave me direction, embraced
me and contributed to my self-actualization. My most
memorable times were thinking out of the box with the
change activity, great classroom discussions, and
wonderful books and developing life-long personal and
professional friendships.”
Elizabeth Walker, Class of 2003-2004
“The
program taught me to be more confident and self-assured. I
also learned not to back down when it was something I
believed in. The most memorable part of the program was
the comrade and support I felt with the other fellows,
especially after having my baby, Anthony.”
Dr.
Cara Papas, Class of 2003-2004
“The
Amy V. Cockcroft program has transformed me as a leader in
my nursing career. My first position upon graduating from
the N.D. program was Director for Palmetto Home Care. This
program really prepared me for this position. I was able
to accomplish a lot of challenges that year that I would
not have been able to without the direction and growth I
obtained from the program. I was able to learn about how
to be a change agent and how to lead others and many
wonderful things happened that year as a Director. I am so
grateful to Ruth and Mary for their love, support, and
guidance. They challenged me to grow in ways that have
never been possible before. I know I will never be the
same again.”
Dr.
Brandy Frost, Class of 2003-2004
“The Amy
V. Cockcroft program provided me an extraordinary
opportunity for self- insight that proved to be my most
professional growth stimulating and rewarding experience.
The leadership, guidance and support of the Amy V.
Cockcroft faculty and the outstanding nurse fellows
contributed significantly to where I am today as the
Associate Director for the Center for Nursing Leadership.
I am privileged and grateful to continue to be a part of
this outstanding leadership program. The best and most
memorable aspect of being a fellow is the personal and
professional friendships of the fellows in my class…truly
a timeless gift.”
Lydia
R. Zager, Class of 2003-2004
“The idea
of such a program was initiated by Amy V. Cockcroft,
retired Dean of the College of Nursing and the resulting
plan suggested was given her enthusiastic support. The
program was developed by a team of extremely talented
professionals who expanded and nurtured it, devoted to the
importance and vision of its focus. It has been not only
a wonderful tribute to Amy Cockcroft, but an appropriate
legacy of her commitment to the College of Nursing and to
the University of South Carolina.”
